Menhir di Vitigliano
Santa Cesarea Terme (LE) - Vitigliano
Object Type: Menhir
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.03902
Longitude: 18.40786
Description: The menhir is deeply implanted in an outcrop of rock and it is surrounded by a wall built by Vitigliano town council. It is well-lighted and it has four breakages (1st fracture at 1.25 m from the base; 2nd fracture at 1.65 m from the base; 3rd fracture at 2.26 m from the base; 4th fracture at 2.92 m from the base). Its corners are rounded and its sides are worn by atmospheric phenomena. On the North and South sides there is a vertical fracture that goes from the top towards the bottom for 0.35 m.
Condition: Good
Dimension: Altezza m 3.86; Faccia Nord m 0.27 x Faccia Est m 0.33.
Direction: Asse lungo Nord-Sud
Historical Notes: The menhir is not among those surveyed by De Giorgi, although he explored the area. Therefore we don’t have any documents that testify its discovery. It is situated on the outskirts of town; it was originally split into five fragments due to a demolition occurred in 1986. It was later restored and relocated in its original site. During the Easter period it is decorated with olive branches and it is used as an Osanna by the locals, who also report another similar monument in the close vicinity, disappeared in the last few years. Around the mid 80s someone reported a lorry knocking it down.
