Menhir n. 2
Palese (BA)
Object Type: Menhir
Staus: Present
Latitude: 41.15122
Longitude: 16.75858
Description: At present the menhir is affected by the building development in the town. It appears as a stump with irregular shape and a quadrangular base, which is unusual for menhirs in Puglia. The megalithic monument is quite interesting. It is made of a short and quite stocky vertical stone (85cm tall; it was originally 1.50m tall but part of it was buried in the ground. Its base measures 50 x 50cm). It has the irregular aspect of a solid stump, possibly the remains of a taller pillar. When the megalith was moved another stone was added, with round shape and a radius of 65 cm circa, very similar to a millstone and quite tasteless, not there originally, coming from a hypogeum oil mill inside Palazzo Capitaneo. The North side of the structure has a central breakage running along its length.  On the surfaces of the menhir there are moss and lichens as well as organic and inorganic scaling.
Condition: Good
Dimension: Altezza 1.02 m; Faccia Nord 0.64 m x Faccia Est 0.60 m.
Direction: Asse lungo Est - Ovest
Historical Notes: Malagrinò described it as situated in an olive grove on the road to Bitonto. The megalith was originally situated in the countryside around via Torre di Brencola, on a slight slope. When the housing estate ‘Zona 167’ was built in the area, unfortunately the menhir was removed from its original location and placed at the beginning of Viale Leonardo del Turco, in a small green area. Today it is part of the building complex ‘Menhir’.
