Menhir di Casamassima n. 1
Casamassima (BA)
Object Type: Menhir
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.94866
Longitude: 16.87552
Description: The monolith is situated near the structure of the ‘Cento Pietre’ (A Hundred Stones, Note of the Translator), near the historical house ‘Pietro Rossi’. It rests on a non-floored land delimited by dry stones, adjacent to a road and the access courtyard of the house. The menhir is supported by two symmetrical structures made of wrought iron. Around the structure there are other stones, placed there for decorative purposes, as well as palm trees and light natural vegetation. The menhir is small and on the short sides, all along its height, there is a stratification groove. It has a small iron structure on the short sides, placed there as support and decoration; also on the top there is another iron decoration, as a sort of crown.
Condition: Good
Dimension: Altezza 1.60 m; Faccia Nord 0.26 m x Faccia Est 0.54 m.
Direction: Asse lungo Nord-Sud
Historical Notes: Malagrinò placed it in the territory of Casamassima, on the boundary with the territory of Acquaviva, near the Tenuta Reale. It has been moved back to this place after a robbery occurred in 1994. The monolith had been sold to a well known restaurant in Acquaviva, who proudly showed it on its premises. It was seized by the Carabinieri of Casamassima, on an indication of the Mayor of the same town, Dr. Paola Susca Bonerba; it is now kept in the Casina of the Solicitor Pietro Albenzio, owner of the land where the menhir had been situated. Calò reported it among the missing monuments.
