Menhir Mensi
Castrignano del Capo (LE) - Giuliano di Lecce
Object Type: Menhir
Staus: Present
Latitude: 39.84894
Longitude: 18.33744
Description: Protected by a metal grating, the monolith is at the intersection between three roads, part of the urban area, opposite a hypogeum oil mill built in 1789. Some natural vegetation grows at the base of the menhir. Today the menhir appears to have different dimensions from what De Giorgi reported; the cause might be in the various demolitions and restorations, of which we see the signs on its surface. The menhir is surrounded by an iron railing and on its top there is a stone slab 0.15m thick. On one of the sides, at the top, we can see a rectangular groove 7cm deep, 33cm long and 10-15 cm wide. The monolith stands on a small outcrop of rock; many breakages can be seen on the surface, which have been fixed with concrete during the years. Finally we can see the presence of moss and lichens.
Condition: Good
Dimension: Altezza m 2.03. Faccia Nord m 0.23 x Faccia Est m 0.50. Lastra superiore: Altezza m 0.15 Sezione m 0.80 x m 0.60.
Direction: Asse lungo Nord-Sud
Historical Notes: Described by Cosimo De Giorgi in 1916; the monolith underwent numerous demolitions and restorations.
Legal Condition: Public authority (municipal).
