Dolmen Piedi Grandi
Spongano (LE)
Object Type: Dolmen
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.00441
Longitude: 18.35136
Description: The megalith is situated inside an olive grove, surrounded by oaks and spontaneous vegetation. The capstone has a quadrangular shape and it lays on two monolithic orthostates (South Orthostate: m 0.62 x 0.50 m x 0.24m. North Orthostate: 0.58 m x 0.47 m x 0.24 m) and on an outcrop of rock at its back for approximately 0.70 m from the ground level. Inside the South orthostate there are two holes (not all the way through). Today the megalith appears surrounded by oaks that form a semicircle in the back part, leaving its opening free. The whole structure is placed on an outcrop of rock of approximately 3m x 7m. According to an old legend a path went from the dolmen to an oak grove where the soul of the deceased used to go to cool down.

Historical Notes: It was found in the 30s by P. Graziosi and P. De Lorenzis in a plot full of outcrops of rock. The dolmen caused doubts among scholars because of the perfect squaring of the lithic material it is made of.
