Dolmen Grassi
Giurdignano (LE)
Object Type: Dolmen
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.11286
Longitude: 18.41883
Description: It is situated inside an olive grove; it is difficult to establish if it is a unique monument or two distinct ones. There are two rooms facing each other and it is not easy to tell if in the past a third slab joined everything or the slab was one single block. Today the dolmen is not noticeable in its part to the North, since the capstone and the orthostates that supported it have collapsed. The slab on the South side is on site and it lies on five orthostates, some of which are monolithic and elevate it from 0.80 to 0.90 m on the ground level.
Condition: Bad
Direction: Apertura rivolta a Nord-Ovest
Historical Notes: The megalith was discovered in 1883 by Maggiulli and De Giorgi, who described it as one of the biggest of Salento, partly destroyed. De Giorgi supposed that the original megalith was undivided ‘at arc of a circle’ of 4.30m length and 1.50m width; and that the capstone lay on thirteen pillars. De Giorgi also reported the presence, at approximately 10m distance, of the probable missing connection fragment that had the same characteristics of the remaining slabs.
Legal Condition: Subject to restrictions with deed of 17/11/1920, L.364/1909, art. 5. Private property.
