Dolmen Orfine
Giurdignano (LE)
Object Type: Dolmen
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.11035
Longitude: 18.43045
Description: This dolmen is situated in the countryside, on a plot of land full of outcrops of rock. At present the capstone, which measured 2.30 m x 1.44 m x 0.18/0.24 m, is broken into two pieces. Only the posterior part is on site, supported by a stump of orthostates made of several monolithic blocks of rock. At the entrance of the dolmen, on the East side, there are several slabs; probably some of them were part of the capstone. It is surrounded by brambles and spontaneous vegetation.
Condition: Bad
Dimension: Altezza m 1.18; larghezza m 2.50; profondità m 1.10. Lastrone di copertura (frammento) m 1.42 x m 1.11 x m 0.18/0.25
Direction: Apertura rivolta ad Est
Historical Notes: It was found in 1910 by P. Maggiulli and M. A. Micalella in the plot called Orfine. The megalith was thoroughly described by Cosimo De Giorgi, according to whom the opening was towards the East. In an engraving by Nicolucci (1893) it appears as it must have originally been.
Legal Condition: Subjected to restrictions with deed of 17/11/1910, L.364/1909, art. 5. Private property.
