Menhir Largo Lama
Melpignano (LE)
Object Type: Menhir
Staus: Present
Latitude: 40.15780
Longitude: 18.28877
Description: The menhir is situated in a flowerbed surrounded by a hedge, in a square on the outskirts of town, hidden by the vegetation. It is a perfectly squared parallelepiped with sharp corners and in good condition. It has a deep furrow at the base of the East facing side and a slightly notched corner at the top of the same side.
Condition: VeryGood
Dimension: Altezza m 3.12; Faccia Nord m 0.28 x Faccia Est m 0.37
Direction: Asse lungo Nord-Sud
Historical Notes: Cosimo De Giorgi, at the end of the 19th century, described the menhir situated in Largo Lama, at the intersection between four local roads. In January 1965 the structure was moved due to the widening of the Vito Fazzi road, since it was situated at the centre of the crossroad. The local government moved the monolith approximately 30 m West and placed it inside a flowerbed at the centre of the square, as a traffic island. The Superintendence of Taranto considers such move as ‘unlawful’.
Legal Condition: Recognition of archaeological interest ex Art.4 L. 1089/39 on 09/01/1988 (enforcement order not present) Public authority (municipal)
